The EU-sponsored agency for border control Frontex is unable to conduct research upon all migrants entering the union.

The high influx of refugees exceeds the capacity of the agency to screen people properly, as stated in an official report published Tuesday.

Furthermore, Frontex reported that all its resources are focused on the migrants' ''immediate care, rather than screening or obtaining information on their basic characteristics such as nationality.''

Subsequently, some of the people entering the EU, later become harder to track down.

Only in 2014, illegal border crossings reportedly were 280,000, with more than 170,000 executed through the dangerous Mediterranean route. Unsurprisingly, the most migrants came from Syria and Eritrea, and were often transported on boats floating from Libya on account of the loose border control and high corruption levels in the country.

In response to the worsened situation, EU leaders have expressed a desire to strengthen border control along the vulnerable sea border over the course of the previous week, and pledged for a doubling of ships and aircraft in the Tritor border control operation. Some also demanded the renewal of the cancelled Mare Nostrum operation, Associated Press reminded.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon himself pledged his support for the strengthening of border control, but emphasized the need for ''robust search and rescue'' operations as well.

''The priority should be given to protecting human rights and dignity and saving human lives," he told journalists following a meeting with Pope Francis and visiting an Italian navy vessel involved in Mediterranean rescues. "Everyone knows that much more needs to be done."
