The nuclear power explosion at the Chernobyl power plant happened on April 26, 29 years ago.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko arrived near the site in order to honor the memory of the victims of the heavy industrial incident that left a mark on the entire world.
''The restoration and development of independent Ukraine is irreversibly connected with the history of the struggle to counteract the consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe, with the stories of people who were affected by the fearful disaster,'' stated the Ukrainian President as quoted by RIA Novosti.
The Chernobil reactor number 4 exploded at 1:23 in 1986, causing the most severe nuclear damage in the history of human kind.
The explosion subsequently triggered a fire that lasted ten days. As a result close to 300,000 people had to abandon their homes in the vicinity. Meanwhile, the nuclear cloud covered Northern Europe with massive amounts of radioactive waste.
Two people were killed directly by the explosion but the incident also had severe long-term consequences.
According to a Greenpeace report as of 2006 the Chernobyl accident caused more than 250,000 cancer cases. Approximately 100,000 out of them had a fatal end.
It is largely believed that the incident in Ukraine has been a result of a defect in the design and construction of the power plant. All reactors involved are no longer in use, and a concrete cocoon has been constructed around the unfortunate reactor number four.
