Major Migrant Trafficking Operation Dismantled in Bulgaria
In a significant crackdown on organized crime, Bulgarian Border Police have detained ten individuals involved in migrant trafficking during a targeted operation in the Burgas area
The Plovdiv District Prosecutor’s Office has charged five people, including two customs officers, a Border Police officer, a manager of a freight forwarding company and an employee of the company, with cigarette smuggling.
Hristo Palazov, customs officer at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing point, has been charged with cigarette smuggling carried out on March 29. The shipment was worth BGN 39.8 M. He was assisted by Border Police officer Yancho Georgiev, according to a media statement of the Plovdiv District Prosecutor’s Office, as cited by mediapool.bg.
Customs officer Yuri Grudev has been charged with facilitating cigarette smuggling. Grudev gave advice to the offenders, thereby assisting the smuggling of a shipment of cigarettes without excise tax stickers worth BGN 31 M.
Dinko Shtiryanov, manager of a freight forwarding company, has been charged with assisting cigarette smuggling. He drafted a fake document aimed to be used to cover up the fraud. An employee of Shtiryanov, Nikolay Perchemliev, has been charged with assisting cigarette smuggling. Perchemliev is said to have contributed to the smuggling of a shipment of cigarettes worth BGN 15.5 M.
The prosecuting authority has asked that they be remanded in custody.
On March 31, the prosecuting authority announced that a cigarette smuggling scheme had been intercepted, with 26 people arrested, including 13 customs officers and 3 Border Police officers.
