The Lithuanian Radio and Television Commission suspended on Wednesday the broadcasting of the Russian-language TV channel RTR Planeta for a period of three months.

According to the Lithuanian watchdog, the channel had repeatedly breached the Law on Provision of Information to the Public by instigating war and hatred.

The European Commission had been informed of the violations and the planned suspension, the Lithuania Tribune reports.

The decision was taken after consultations with the country broadcasting the TV content and the European Commission had not reached a consensus, while the violations continued.

The suspension, which is the first of its kind in the EU, will be implemented on April 13 and will not require a court sanction.
