The share of employed women in Bulgaria is decreasing and women’s average earnings continue to be below that of men, according to data of the National Statistical Institute (NSI), as cited by Lazar Lazarov, Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Policy.

Speaking at a sitting of the National Council on Gender Equality at the Council of Ministers in Pravets, Lazarov noted that the pay gap between men and women had amounted to around 21% in 2012, dropping to 20% in 2013.

Lazarov, as cited by news.bg, informed that men were predominantly employed in the processing industry and construction, while trade, education, human medicine and social work were the main spheres of work for women.

Ivaylo Kalfin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labor and Social Policy, declared that gender equality had to be included in all policies of the government.

Tuesday’s meeting of the National Council on Gender Equality at the Council of Ministers featured a discussion on the bill on gender equality.

Kalfin said that the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy would organize a broad discussion on the draft over the next two months.
He emphasized that the adoption of the bill was a priority task for the government.
