Environment minister Ivelina Vasileva has suggested that Bulgaria still faces the threat of an infringement procedure over the delayed implementation of the waste management systems.
Vasileva inspected Thursday the progress of the implementation of the regional waste management system in Pernik.
She made clear that Bulgaria had been provided with EU funding for the establishment of 20 regional waste management systems under operational program Environment 2007-2013.
Vasileva, as cited by econ.bg, assured that the Environment Ministry was doing its best to prevent sanctions for the country.
She informed that the project for the regional landfill near Pernik had a price tag of BGN 20 M and was being financed under operational program Environment 2007-2013.
Bulgaria’s Environment Minister said that the non-hazardous waste landfill was 90% ready, adding that the other site that was being built under the project, the household waste separation and composting facility, was 94% ready.
Vasileva thanked Bulgarian municipalities for the mobilization of efforts to wrap up activities under the program by the end of the year.
She explained that Bulgaria had negotiated BGN 560 M in EU funding for the construction of waste management systems under the operational program Environment 2014-2020.
Vasileva added that municipalities would be provided with more opportunities for implementing pilot projects.
She specified that the project in Pernik would serve a total of 133 530 residents in the first year after its launch and would create 37 jobs, according to the press office of the Environment Ministry.
