Bulgaria’s Justice Ministry to Dismiss 700 Prison System Staff
Bulgaria’s Justice Ministry plans to lay off around 700 officials of the Chief Directorate for the Execution of Sentences and judicial security staff and implement a restructuring of the Registry Agency, according to Deputy Justice Minister Petko Petkov.
Petkov, as cited by mediapool.bg, announced Thursday that half of the regional units of the Registry Agency, 6 out of 12, would be closed and 5% of the staff would be axed.
Speaking before a meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council (VSS), Petkov underscored that no correctional officers, social workers or psychologists would be dismissed.
He also made clear that the officials working at the front offices of the Registry Agency would not be affected by the staff cuts.
Petkov admitted that there was a problem with the planned reform as the employees that were to be removed from office had to receive severance pay amounting to a number of salaries.
He pointed out that the resources would not suffice to pay the layoff compensations, adding that the Justice Ministry was in talks with the Finance Ministry over the matter.
Petkov suggested that some of the people could be paid their compensations at a later stage.
He refuted allegations that the Registry Agency would be turned into a directorate of the Justice Ministry, stressing that it would remain an independent structure.
The Registry Agency welcomed a new director, with Ventsislav Spiridonov being replaced by his deputy, Elena Markova, after the publication of a report indicating numerous violations in the work of the Registry Agency officials, the organization of work at the Business Register, and the public procurement practices.
