Chinese investors are interested in obtaining a concession contract for Plovdiv Airport and turning it into a logistics hub for Europe and Asia, according to Bulgaria’s Economy Minister Bozhidar Lukarski.

Lukarski met Tuesday with a representative of Hainan Longquanren Century Invest and Development Co, according to the press office of the Economy Ministry.

The company is the Chinese partner of the Euro-Chinese Economic Development Zone, which is part of the Trakia Economic Zone.

The representative of the Chinese firm said that a group of Chinese investors wanted to take part in the construction of a trade and logistics center in Plovdiv, where European and Bulgarian products could be presented and then exported to Asian markets.

He said that partner showroom centers could also be opened in China’s free economic zones.

He emphasized that China relied a lot on the future of the electronic commerce, which was expected to become the primary engine of the Asian economy.

He suggested that centers of this type would allow customers to check the quality of goods, thereby avoiding the risk of buying fake goods which were a very common occurrence in large e-commerce platforms.

He argued that this would also help avoid the long chain of intermediaries between European and Chinese consumers.

The representative of Hainan Longquanren Century Invest and Development Co went on to say that the company also intended to build halls for forums and meetings, as well as a Euro-Asian university at the Euro-Chinese Economic Development Zone in Plovdiv.

He informed Lukarski about the “New Silk Road” economic plan presented by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Boao Forum for Asia at the end of last week.

The Chinese businessman clarified that a USD 40 B had been established under the plan, which was aimed at boosting trade ties with Europe, adding that Bulgaria could submit projects and take part in it.

The two agreed that Chinese investors would visit Bulgaria in May to get acquainted on the spot with investment opportunities in the country.
