Ukrainian Woman Detained in Sunny Beach After Attempted Bribery of Police Officers
Bulgarian authorities found themselves grappling with a peculiar case involving a 60-year-old Ukrainian woman
The Plovdiv Appellate Court has released the former Director of the Svilengrad Customs Office Todor Karaivanov, Todor Karaivanov, on a bail of BGN 5000.
Karaivanov was arrested on January 28 in an operation of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).
He was receiving a bribe of EUR 600 at the moment of arrest. Earlier the same day, he had received a bribe of BGN 600.
A search of his office yielded EUR 12 000.
Police seized money and three sacks of documents from his home.
Thursday’s decision of the Plovdiv Appellate Court is final and cannot be appealed, according to dnevnik.bg.
The magistrates say that the remand measure imposed by the court of first instance is unlawful and that there is no risk of Karaivanov going into hiding or committing another offence because he has been removed from office.
Karaivanov has insisted that his arrest is a provocation aimed at thwarting the interception of smuggling channels through the Svilengrad Customs Office.
