The Romanian National Directorate (DNA) has requested that that the former Finance Minister Darius Valcov should be arrested.
Local Senate has officially approved the request, after Valcov himself appeared in front of MPs and made a statement that he would welcome a lawsuit as it will be a chance for him to prove his innocence, as reported by Romania Insider.
Anticorruption prosecutors have accused Valcov of bribery and influence peddling during his time in office as mayor of the Southern Romanian city of Slatina. allegedly, Valcov took a EUR 2 M bribe in exchange for his assistance in favor of a local businessman to secure a tender contract in a municipal project.
Valcov submitted his resignation in the middle of March after the accusations were released.
According to the prosecutors' report Valcov had hidden some of his wealth in a safe at a small village. Allegedly, the former Finance Minister had illegally obtained USD 90, 000, RON 1.3 M ( EUR 300, 000), three 3kg gold bars as well as two paintings - one by Renoir and another by Jean Cocteau.
A similar request for the arrest of Transport Minister Dan Sova has been submitted to Romanian Senate, but has not received enough votes in favor.
