The partition of the smaller units of the nuclear power station Kozloduy has started so that the metal remnants can be submitted for recycling.

The dismantling of the nuclear units will be executed by the state-owned company Radioactive Waste, as reported by bTV news.

So far, approximately 12,000 tons of equipment have been dismantles and 55,000 tons remain. Each and every detail is being scanned for radiation. Work in the zones of high control on the premises of the nuclear power station have just begun. The sources of high radiation are located there.

It is generally considered that the life of nuclear power units continued even after they are no longer officially exploited. In the case of NPP Kozloduy some of the equipment will be buried in the radioactive waste storage unit situated right next to the plant.

However, not all parts of the nuclear power plant will be dismantled. The 25-ton concrete blocks will most probably be kept for the purposes of protection against disasters.

The emptied turbine hall could hold host new equipment in the future, as stated by staff members at NPP Kozloduy.

According to financial estimations, the dismantling of the smaller blocks will cost a little over EUR 1 B, while it still remains unclear who will be the source of at least one third of the money.
