UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has stated Thursday that sanctions against Russia can only be lifted in case the Minsk agreement is upheld.

He arrived in Kiev for an official visit and met with Ukraine's Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin, President Petro Poroshenko, and PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

Hammond re-stated his view on the matter at the joint news conference Friday, alongside Poland's Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna. He said that the Eu will remain united when it comes to the sanctions against Russia.

The UK Foreign Secretary added that there is a state of readiness for even harsher measures to be implemented in case there are severe violations to the peace agreement.

The Minsk ceasefire deal was announced on February 12, after 17-hour negotiations in the Normandy four format.
