There have been various suggestions as to why opposition leader Boris Nemtsov was killed on Thursday evening in Moscow, 500 meters from the Kremlin. Here are some of them:

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin's spokesperson, has called the development a "100-percent provocation" and "a contract killing".

An Interior Ministry source quoted by Interfax argues it was a "political murder" aimed at destabilizing the environment in the country.

Russia's Investigative Committee believes there could be various reasons, including his position on the Charlie Hebdo attack of January 7. They also hypothesize he might have been killed to "rally support" against the government.

Nemtsov's fellow activists do not rule out that the murder could be related with his report "proving" active and direct Russian involvement in Ukraine, a document that had been in preparation.

An Interfax source speaks of "relation to his business activities".
