Sofia will support new sanctions against Russia if the agreement to end hostilities in Ukraine's Donbass region does not yield results, Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov says.

In a Friday interview with Reuters Mitov added the country was considering whether to send a humanitarian convoy with food and medical aid to ethnic Bulgarians in Ukraine.

In his words, "the sanctions are the only instrument which the European Union and the transatlantic community in general have at this very moment, as no one of course wants to go to war and we are hoping for political solution, for a diplomatic solution."

"But of course we are ready to react accordingly if the agreement gets violated," Mitov added.

Ukraine struck with Donbass rebels in mid-February a deal brokered by Russia, Germany and France under which both Kiev and rebels are to lay down arms, retreat heavy weapons from Eastern Ukraine and work for stability and peace.
