The subway section to Sofia Airport is 99% ready and will be opened in early April, while the stretch reaching Business Park Sofia is 96% ready and will be operational by early May at the latest.
The progress of construction works on the subway sections was inspected Friday by Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova, and Stoyan Bratoev, CEO of Metropoliten EAD, who made a test trip from Sofia Airport to Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd.
Moskovski expressed the ongoing support of the Transport Ministry for the Sofia subway, adding that the launch of the new section would make Sofia Airport a multi-modal transport hub accessible by road transport and subway transport.
“Statistics on subway transport in Sofia is incontestable and it is one of the most important projects from the point of view of the public interest. Over 350 000 people use the Sofia subway on a daily basis,” Moskovski noted.
The third stage of the expansion of the Sofia subway is financed under EU operational program Transport 2007-2013.
The third stage of the expansion of the Sofia subway includes 2 sections, Lot 1 – “Tsarigradsko Shose Blvd – Sofia Airport” and Lot 2 "Mladost 1 - Business Park Sofia in Mladost 4."
The project is worth a total of BGN 407 M, with BGN 215 of them provided under EU operational program Transport 2007-2013.
The project envisages the construction of 7.6 kilometers of subway lines and 7 new subway stations.
