At least thirty politicians and administration officials involved in corruption affairs should be sent to prison, under a new anti-corruption strategy cited by Bulgarian media outlets.

A special unit due to be set up Friday and aimed at fighting corruption will dedicate its effort to this end, according to 24 Chasa daily.

The unit will comprise at least 200 prosecutors, investigators, inspectors and other employees and will likely be modeled after existing institutions in Romania, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, according to the report.

On Friday the government is due to give the thumbs up on a move to set the new structure.

In the past months Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva has vowed that Bulgaria will put in effort to follow the example of Romania, which has achieved remarkable progress, compared to Bulgaria, in sentencing and jailing prominent politicians involved in corruption scandals.

Kuneva and other officials have repeatedly warned that Bulgaria risks being decoupled from Romania in the EU Commission's Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) used to monitor both EU member states.
