The state prosecution has dropped charges of attempted murder against the man who attacked the DPS party's honorary chair Ahmed Dogan in 2013.

Oktay Enimehdemov was sentenced in February to three-and-a-half years of imprisonment after found guilty of death threat, but was acquitted of attempted murder. The Sofia Appellate Court in October upheld the sentence.

This comes hours before a sitting at the Supreme Court of Cassation (VKS) where a final ruling is to be issued.

Prosecutors are now demanding that the VKS, the last-instance court whose decisions cannot be appealed, have a ruling only on Ehimehmedov's death threat to Ahmed Dogan. According to the news website Dnevnik.bg, they do not consider anymore that the man was trying to kill Dogan during an event of his party.

In January 2013, Enimehmedov pointed a gas pistol at the head of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS)'s then outgoing chair, who at the time was delivering his resignation speech at a congress in downtown Sofia. Enimehmedov, in his own words, had wanted to teach the founder of the ethnic Turkish party that he was not "intangible".

The pistol jammed, and ever since there has been speculation as to whether the young man was intending to do any harm, with some doubting the episode was not staged.

Enimehmedov was knocked down by security personnel and severely beaten after the incident, but a probe into the case has reached a dead end.

The young man said in an interview last April that he would like to enter Bulgaria's political life to serve "the people's interest" if acquitted.

If his sentence is confirmed, he might actually spend less than two years behind bars, since he has remained in detention for most of the time since January 2013.
