The Bulgarian Parliament finally approved on Thursday the amendments to the Interior Ministry Act.

According to the adopted amendments, the President will appoint the chief secretary of the Interior Ministry and the chairperson of the State Agency for National Security (DANS).

The top officials will be appointed by a presidential decree on the nomination of the Ministerial Council.

The changes provide for the General Directorate Combating Organised Crime (GDBOP), which was entrusted to DANS, to be restored under the authority of the Interior Ministry.

State Agency Technical Operations (DATO) will be headed by a chairperson, who will be similarly appointed by a presidential decree on the nomination of the Ministerial Council.

Thus, through amending the Interior Ministry Act, Bulgarian MPs have also changed the Special Intelligence Means (SRS) Act.

Growth in the career in the ministry will be regulated by competitions.

The Interior Ministry will have four general directorates: GDBOP, National Police, Border Police, Fire Safety and Protection of the Population.

Other changes to the structures of DANS are foreseen, which will aim to focus its activity on its counter-intelligence nature and its information-analytical practices.

Some of the amendments virtually reverse changes introduced to the legislation by the previous Parliament in May 2014.

GERB, the senior partner in Bulgaria's coalition government, is pondering the option to replace the current Chief Secretary Svetlozar Lazarov, who was appointed during the tenure of its socialist-liberal predecessors in 2013.
