Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov held a working meeting with ambassadors of EU member states to Bulgaria on Monday, at which topics such as Ukraine, the Energy Union and refugees were discussed.

Mitov participated on the invitation of Latvian Ambassador Ilgvars Klava, as his country is chairing the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU, the press service of the foreign ministry reports.

The crisis in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, the Western Balkans and regional security, the economic challenges facing the EU and the EU Energy Union were all discussed at the meeting.

Mitov assured the ambassadors that Bulgaria is a foreseeable, reliable and loyal ally.

The Foreign Minister described the Bulgarian government as willing to carry out reforms, ensure political stability and restore the confidence of its international partners.

The participants in the meeting converged on the opinion that only the respect of the Minsk agreement could lead to a deescalation of the conflict in Ukraine.

The European diplomats discussed the implementation of the decisions taken at the NATO Wales Summit in 2014.

Mitov highlighted that Bulgarian armed forces need to undergo modernisation in order to become operationally compatible with those of the Alliance.

The Foreign Minister informed of the strong migratory pressure exerted on Bulgaria and turned to the ambassadors for their help and cooperation.

He expressed hope that the EU member states were aware of the efforts invested by Bulgaria in guarding the external border of the Union.

In his opinion, cooperation is the key instrument towards ensuring the region's security and stability.

Mitov reaffirmed Bulgaria's support for EU membership of the Western Balkan countries and underlined that their European perspective had no alternative.

According to him, the EU Energy Union is of strategic importance to Bulgaria and is one of the main elements in ensuring energy security.

The Foreign Minister assured that it was in Bulgaria's national interest to attract investments, guarantee the energy supplies and build the gas interconnectors with Greece and Romania.

In conclusion, he thanked the European Commission and the member states for expressing confidence in the Bulgarian government in the last CVM report.

Mitov assured that Bulgaria is to continue to work on the implementation of the necessary reforms, prescribed by the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM).
