Bulgarian Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov presented on Friday a project on “increasing the integrity and motivation of prosecutors in the context of the new challenges presented to the fight against organised crime”.

His Excellency Denis Knobel, Swiss Ambassador to Bulgaria, also took part in the presentation, daily Dnevnik reports.

Tsatsarov revealed that one of the aims of the project is the creation of an independent capacity for investigation.

The Prosecutor General assessed the project as extremely important as it opened the way forward for the establishment of a new criminalistic service.

Such an operational centre would function under the authority of the national investigation service and will facilitate the quicker reaction in certain cases.

The Swiss ambassador also pointed to the project's aims as being to continue the fight against organised crime and human trafficking.

The beneficiary of the project, which is valued at EUR 900 000, is the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office.

It will be carried out under the guidance of the chief of the Specialised Appellate Prosecutor's Office Daniela Popova, with the period for its completion being 36 months.

Regarding the report on the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM), which was released on Wednesday, Tsatsarov said that the recommendations of the European Commission (EC) concerned not only the judiciary.

He pointed that the judiciary needed an adequate set of instruments, saying that he is to propose to the prime minister the creation of a speciliased structure, which will allow for the prosecution to react immediately in the initial stages of an investigation.

The presentation of the project was also attened by the Chief Secretary of the Interior Ministry Svetlozar Lazarov and the president of the State Agency for National Security (DANS) Vladimir Pisanchev.
