EU CVM Report Urges Bulgaria To Speed Up Judicial Reform

The EU Commission on Wednesday urged Bulgaria to step up efforts to reform its judiciary.
The country, which joined the EU in 2007, should follow the Commission's "specific recommendations in the areas of independence, accountability and integrity of the judiciary; reform strategies for the judicial system; efficiency of the judicial system; corruption; and organised crime.''
In its report under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) for Bulgaria the EU's executive body highlighted the recommendations ''will need to take root for the sustainability of change to be shown.''
In order to track progress, the EU Commission will need to see ''tangible results''.
The overall conclusion is that progress in problematic areas ''has been slow.''
In a Flash Eurobarometer survey, published by the European Commission on Tuesday, most Bulgarians (78%) expressed their belief that the monitoring of Bulgaria's progress in reforming its justice system should continue.
Meanwhile, 61% of the respondents said they believed that the CVM mechanism has had a positive impact on the country's judicial system, and over a half believed in the positive effect of CVM reports on corruption and organized crime.
