Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced on Monday that the government had decided to declare a state of emergency in the eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Yatsenyuk added that the overall alert level across the country was heightened in order to coordinate the activities of the authorities and provide security for the citizens.

These measures come as response to the ongoing violence in eastern Ukraine, which has been renewed with new intensity since the start of the year.

Last week the shelling of a trolleybus stop claimed the lives of at least eight civilians in Donetsk, while 30 residents of Mariupol were killed after the city came under rocket attack.

The government forces and the pro-Russian separatists continue to mutually blame each other for the attacks.
