Bulgaria’s Deputy Justice Minister Petko Petkov has suggested that the country needs to have an efficient prosecuting authority before it can have efficient courts.
In a Tuesday interview for the morning broadcast of bTV, he noted that there were suspicions that the prosecuting authority was keeping a political or economic umbrella over certain people.
He noted that the only way to guarantee a reliable judicial system was to use its services and to complain every time the judiciary malfunctioned.
Petkov, as cited by bTV, was adamant that a lot of changes had to be made to the work of the prosecuting authority.
He commented that Bulgarian citizens, as well as professionals in the sphere, were not quite convinced that the prosecuting authority was doing a good job.
Petkov said that judicial reform was not support to start in one concrete place, but in many places all at the same time, including the Supreme Judicial Council (VSS), the courts, the prosecuting authority, and the organization of competitions for the posts of magistrates.
He underscored that the fact that the judiciary was independent did not mean that it was beyond control.
Bulgaria’s Deputy Justice Minister argued that something was wrong with the organization of work of VSS, stressing that it had to be split into two chambers.
