Bulgaria's No.1 female tennis player Tsvetana Pironkova lost to Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic at the semifinals of the women's singles competition at the Apia International tournament in Sydney.
Kvitova defeated Pironkova, who was the reigning champion in Sydney, with 7:5, 6:1 on Thursday, electronic daily Dnevnik reports.
In this way the Czech ended the fourteen consecutive victories achieved by the Bulgarian in Sydney and denied her the chance of defending her title.
Kvitova claimed her fourth victory against Pironkova in the five matches that the two have played between them.
The World's No. 4 avenged for the defeat she suffered in their last match between them, which occurred at the semifinals in Sydney in 2014.
Kvitova is to face her fellow national Karolina Pliskova in the final.
