Bulgaria has nominated its Magurata Cave to be put on UNESCO’s list of world cultural and natural heritage sites.
The cave is famous for its stalactites, stalagmites and stalactones as well as unique drawings on its walls dating back as far as the Stone Age and the Bronze Age.
Bulgaria’s Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov and UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova agreed on Tuesday in Sofia to speed up as much as possible the process of putting Magurata on the list of world heritage sites, the Ministry of Culture said in a statement.
The drawings at Magurata have their analogues discovered in famous cultural centres in Italy, the Iberian Peninsula and Middle Asia.
Magurata is one of the largest caves in Bulgaria with the length of its known galleries exceeding 2,600 metres. It is situated 35 kilometres southwest of Vidin city, on the Danube river, and 17 kilometres from the picturesque town of Belogradchik in northewestern Bulgaria. Sofia is 170 kilometres to the south.
