The services provided by Sofia Metro are to run at more frequent intervals from April in order to accommodate for the increased number of passengers.

This was announced by the executive director of Sofia Metropolitan Stoyan Bratoev, daily Sega reports.

Currently the services on line 1 (between the districts of Lyulin and Mladost) run at every three minutes and a half, which will be shortened to three minutes in April.

The services between the districts of Nadezhda and Lozenets (line 2), which are currently provided at every seven minutes, will start running at every six minutes from April.

Bratoev commented that at present the Metro can not service for all of its passengers, especially in the morning peak hours.

Ten new trains have been bought, which will enter into service when the extension of the underground to Sofia Airport and the Business Park is launched in April.

Figures from Sofia Municipality reveal that the number of passengers using the Metro has steadily increased since 2000.

In 2000 the underground was used by 72 000 passengers daily, rising to 80 000 in 2003, and reaching 145 000 in 2009.

The increase continued in the next years, reaching 280 000 passengers daily in 2013, rising to 310-320 000 in 2014.

Bratoev said that all around the world there were metro stations that were less busy, but this changes with the development of the city.

Station Tsarigradsko Shose was an example for this, as it initially serviced 2000 passengers daily, while at present it accommodates for 10-12 000 passengers.

In his words, according to international standards, a metro station is effective if it has 2800 passengers.

At present the least busy metro station in Sofia is Lomsko Shose, while Serdika remains the busiest, servicing 60 000 passengers daily.

The other stations service an average of 10-15 000 passengers daily.
