Farmers' Tractor Protest Paralyzes Brussels' European District
Brussels' European District faced significant disruption on Tuesday morning as farmers from various agricultural organizations staged a protest against EU agricultural policy
By end-January 2015, nearly 67 000 agricultural producers will receive an additional sum of BGN 15 in redistributive payments for farms of 1-30 hectares (10-300 decares) apart from the main subsidies per hectare of arable land.
The subsidies constitute additional aid for small-scale farmers, who will be allocated a total of BGN 104 898 241 each year under the redistributive payment scheme, according to experts, as cited by farmer.bg.
In 2012, a total of 66 824 agricultural producers in Bulgaria received payments per area for farms of 1-30 hectares.
The total amount of land processed by these agricultural producers amounts to 3.5 million decares, or 10% of the total of arable land in the country.
According to preliminary calculations, owners of arable land of 10-300 decares will receive BGN 45 per decare in 2015, depending on the number of approved applications of farmers.
At the same time, owners of land plots of 500 decares will receive BGN 40 per decare, while those with over 1000 decares will be paid BGN 34 per decare.
Farmers processing plots of 2500 decares will be paid BGN 32 per decare, those with farms of 3000 decares will be given BGN 31.60.
Bulgaria’s Agriculture Ministry has not yet specified a date for the transfer of direct payments under the 2014 campaign, according to money.bg.
During his last meeting with representatives of the association of grain producers, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov vowed that the payment would start by end-January.
