Six UN Staff Killed in Israeli Strike on Gaza School
The United Nations agency for Palestine refugees reported that six of its staff members were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school located in the central Gaza Strip
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced that he was planning to resubmit the UN Security Council resolution on ending the occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel.
Abbas stated that Palestine is to submit the resolution until the Security Council recognises it as a state under occupation, Sky News Arabia quoted him as saying on Sunday.
The UN Security Council rejected the Palestinian statehood resolution on 30 December 2014, with eight nations voting in favour, two voting against, while five abstained.
Russia supported the resolution, the US and Australia voted against, while the UK abstained.
The resolution was submitted by Jordan and a coalition of Arab states, most of which have been replaced over New Year in line with the rotating membership of the Security Council.
Abbas is to seek again the support of Jordan, which remains non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2015.
The resolution calls for withdrawal of Israel to its pre-1967 borders, the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and achievement of Palestinian independence by 2017.
According to UN regulations, in order for a resolution to be adopted it has to be supported by at least nine nations, including all five permanent members of the Security Council.
The adoption seems impossible as the US has expressed its firm opposition against the resolution.
Last week Abbas signed more than 20 requests to join various international treaties and covenants including the International Criminal Court as a measure to continue to seek adoption of the UN resolution.
Israel responded by suspending Palestine's tax payments that are used to pay the salaries of civil servants, the Wall Street Journal reminds.
