A quarter of Bulgarians point to walking as being their most frequent mode of transport, the latest Eurobarometer survey on quality of transport shows.

Although cars were the most mentioned mode of transport in each member state, Bulgaria and Spain have the highest share of people who walk on a typical day – 25 %.

Car is by far the most used mode of transport in the whole of the EU with 54 % of the respondents using it on a typical day, followed by 19 % who use urban public transport (bus, metro, tram, ferry), and those walking amounting to 14 %.

The highest share of people pointing to cars as their most frequent mode of transport can be found in Cyprus – 85 %, followed by Ireland, Slovenia and Malta.

The highest share of people using urban public transport on a typical day is in Latvia - 31 %, followed by Poland and Romania.

Unsurprisingly, most people use bicycles in the Netherlands (36 %), where the share of people cycling on a typical day is almost as high as the number of people using cars - 45 %.

According to the survey, convenience, chosen by 61 % of the respondents, and speed, selected by 31 % of the participants, are more important than price when choosing a mode of transport.

Frequent services, chosen by 27 % of respondents, better coverage, selected by 26 % of participants in the survey, and cheaper or seasonal tickets are most likely to encourage Europeans to swap cars with public transport.

However 21 % of Europeans express their firm support and preference for cars over public transport.

In Bulgaria 42 % of people use cars as their most frequent mode of public transport, followed by 27 % who prefer using urban public transport on a typical day.
