The Bulgarian municipalities that were affected the most from last year's disastrous floods are still recovering slowly.

Bulgaria is now in the position to make an assessment of the damages and estimate the amount of European Union (EU) aid it can rely on, private bTV station reports.

The three most affected regions that rely on aid from the EU Solidarity Fund are Varna (especially its Asparuhovo quarter), Mizia and the Southeast (encompassing Stara Zagora, Haskovo and Burgas).

So far EUR 10.5 million from the EU Solidarity Fund have been awarded to Varna, BGN 9 million of which will go for the construction of the drainage pipe in Asparuhovo, which contributed to the disastrous flood.

The situation in Mizia is worse as the disaster is classified as only regional and the funds that can be allocated are considerably less.

Bulgaria has claimed EUR 79 million for Mizia, but the Regional Minister Lilyana Pavlova estimates that only EUR 2 million will be allocated for Mizia and Vidin.

As the claims for Stara Zagora, Haskovo and Burgas are still to be made, Bulgaria will insist that the EU classifies the floods in the Southeast as national disaster.
