South Korea has proposed to resume high-level talks with North Korea on several issues, including preparation for “peaceful unification”.

Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae expressed his hope that the reunion of families separated for more than 60 years by the Korean War could be discussed at the meeting, the BBC reports.

North Korea, which has previously seen unification as a means for its subjugation by South Korea, has not responded yet.

Ryoo Kihl-jae invited the North Korean government to have conversation in January next year.

The meeting could take place in Pyongyang, Seoul or any other North or South Korean city.

The BBC reminds that the last high-level talks took place in February, which led to rare reunions of Korean families.

Further talks were scheduled to take place in October, but did not materialise, following North Korea's accusation of the South that it had not taken adequate measures to stop anti-Northern activists.
