The "Bulgarian Christmas" charity event, which culminated in a concert on Christmas Day, has raised BGN 1.50 M so far, officials from the Presidency say.

"Bulgarian Christmas" is an annual event raising funds for children with innate health problems held under the patronage of the President of Bulgaria.

Apart from President Rosen Plevneliev, his predecessor Georgi Parvanov, former caretaker PM Georgi Bliznashki and EU Commission Vice President Kristalina Georgieva also attended the event, alongside foreign diplomats, politicians and many children supported by the initiative.

About 3500 children with innate ailments are born in Bulgaria each year. The event seeks to help them by providing specialized medical equipment, medicaments and rehabilitation, as well as the apparati needed by a number of hospitals.

It also unites leading media outlets, intellectuals, sports people, singers, and actors.

Donations are not only accepted at Christmas, but all year round, with final results of the charity campaign usually announced in January.

Those willing to help the cause could send text message to 1117 (if using a mobile phone) or call 09001117 (for landlines).

As many as BGN 2.163 M, a record high, were raised last year, with BGN 1.2 M of the allocated to thirty Bulgarian hospitals. The money helped provide assistance to 524 children.
