The next round of the Minsk talks between the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian rebels has been called off, according to Belarusian officials.

A spokesman for the country's Foreign Ministry is quoted by the BBC as saying "there wil be no contact group meeting today", but stopped short of any specific reason.

According to Russian media outlets he has added that setting a new date for negotiations lies within the competence of both sides and he cannot name any other date.

In September, Kiev and pro-Russian rebels agreed to work toward a ceasefire which is now being implemented after months-long violation from both sides.
