EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini has called on Russia not to involve Southeast Europe in the Moscow-Brussels dispute over the Ukraine crisis.

Mogherini's comments come after Russia announced earlier this week it was scrapping the South Stream gas pipeline project, citing Bulgaria's reluctance to unfreeze construction.

Her remarks are also referring to Serbia's EU accession negotiations, with Brussels calling on Belgrade to join EU sanctions against Moscow.

South Stream was designed to bypass Ukraine, delivering amounts of gas equaling nearly a third of the total current supplies Russia pumps to Europe.

Meanwhile Mogherini has also asked her predecessor Catherine Ashton to keep her position of chief negotiator in the 5+1 talks over Iran's much disputed nuclear program, according to the Wall Street Journal.
