Tens of people have gathered in front of the Corporate Commercial Bank (KTB) headquarters in Sofia waiting for officials from the bank to help them overcome the difficulties they have withdrawing their money.

Nine banks are currently repaying deposits after the process began on December 4, and sums that had been blocked for months are generally being repaid without any reports of incidents or tensions, though some citizens are unable to operate their sums.

The Deposit Insurance Fund had introduced a system under which each depositor is to visit a certain bank depending on the last digit of his uniform civil number (UCN). In case of legal entities the bank's name is tied to the last digit of the unified identification code (UIC) or BULSTAT code.

The UCN is visible on ID cards, but many citizens have reported they are asked by bank officials to visit KTB's headquarters in downtown Sofia to be issued a document verifying their personal data.

A Novinite reader has complained of a discrepancy between names as written on ID cards and in the records at KTB which the nine banks are using for the reimbursement.

A woman having assets at KTB was quoted by Darik Radio as saying the bank's administration had misspelled part of her personal data and the errors had to be corrected if she was to be granted access to her money.

Authorities have urged citizens not to flock en masse to bank offices as early as December 4, since deposits can be reimbursed in the next five years.

As many as 255 000 people are holding assets at KTB.
