The photo exhibition “The Abandoned Bulgaria” shows 30 deserted places in the country.

It opened in Sofia's Orange Center bookshop on "Graf Ignatiev" street on November 10 and will be on till December 10.

The photos are part of the project of the photographer Hristo Uzunov, who travelled the country for a year, looking for abandoned villages, buildings, factories and machinery.

“I was looking for the places, once full of life and completely forsaken today, left to ruin,” Uzunov told the Trud daily. “Probably the most impressive was “the dish” on Buzludzha peak. It is a very forlorn place, but one can tell it was magnificent once. The creepiest, however, was the kindergarten in Kurdzhali. This place had a very bad vibe.”

“The dish” is a monument of Bulgaria's communist party, commemorating the establishment of the party in 1891, at a meeting in the area. It was built between 1974 and 1981 and was once the largest monument in Bulgaria.

It is featured in several internet lists of most spectacular abandoned places in the world and is a popular attraction among foreign tourists, though entering is strictly forbidden for safety reasons.
