The self-proclaimed leader of Islamic State (IS) Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was injured in an air strike, Iraqi officials and the state television announced.

The information was confirmed by both the Interior and Defense Ministries in Baghdad.

Al-Baghdadi was injured in an attack carried by the air forces of the international coalition, aimed at a building in the city of Mosul where the top leaders had gathered on Friday evening.

Earlier, it was announced that following the strikes of the Iraqi air forces west of Baghdad, the deputy leader of the Jihadists had been injured. During the attack other 27 terrorists, including 11 foreign mercenaries had been killed.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi army reached the center of the northern city of Baiji. The purpose of the military operation is to raise the siege laid by the IS on the largest refinery in the country.

IS militants are still controlling chunks of land in both Iraq and Syria.
