The Sofia Appellate Court has temporarily suspended the embezzlement case f against former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov due to the immunity from prosecution he acquired after taking an oath of office as MP.

The case involves the embezzlement of BGN 50 000 to the benefit of Orlin Todorov, former head of the anti-mafia unit(GDBOP, the Interior Ministry's Chief Directorate Combating Organized Crime) in Veliko Tarnovo.

This is the second case against Tsvetanov to be suspended in anticipation of a decision of the Chief Prosecutor on a request for the lifting of his MP immunity, according to reports of dnevnik.bg.

The case involving unauthorized wiretapping by the Interior Ministry has already been suspended.

The embezzlement case was launched in November 2013.

The case has reached the court of second instance after the acquittal of the court of first instance, the Sofia City Court.

In end-October 2014, Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov suggested that he would submit a request for the lifting of Tsvetanov’s immunity.

The third case against Tsvetanov, which involves crimes against justice, is also likely to be suspended.

In May 2014, Tsvetanov was sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment by the Sofia City Court, the court of first instance, for blocking permits for the use of special surveillance equipment against Orlin Todorov.
