Bulgaria's newly elected MPs convened at the first session of the country's 43-rd National Assembly.

By Constitution the session was opened by the oldest MP – actor Stefan Danailov from the Bulgarian Socialist Party.

“Joke or not, I am once again the oldest MP,” Danailov said, starting his opening remarks and urged the MPs to be more responsible. “There are many and different promises, with which we tried to convince our constituencies. I hope that the wisdom of the people will help us mobilise and unite our thoughts in the name of its resurrection and self-confidence. We have neglected many of the principles of democracy. We are obliged to honestly face the truth and suggest the main steps towards the national salvation so we can gain back the trust of the people.”

After the MPs were sworn in, President Rosen Plevneliev urged them to prevent the erosion of confidence in parliamentary democracy. “Bulgaria does not need messiahs who single handedly decide what is right and what is wrong,” he said in his speech. “The Bulgarian citizens want a functioning state, which guarantees justice, social protection and abiding to the rules by everyone.”

Plevneliev pointed out that the country needs a functioning parliament and regular government.

“Instability is the greatest threat to Bulgaria,” he said. “It is of utmost importance that we rise to a new level of political and institutional stability.”
