Bulgaria: Sliven, Burgas Regions – The 'Youngest' In Bulgaria

The regions of Sliven and Burgas have the highest percentage of young population, shows data of Eurostat, quoted by Bulgarian-language media.

In the Sliven region the share of people aged below 15 is 17.6% and in Burgas – 15%. The average share of people below 15 in the EU is around 16% of the total population.

The “youngest” regions in the EU are four in France and one in Ireland, Spain and the UK.

At the same time, the region of Vidin in north western Bulgaria has the largest share of population above 65 years – 26% of the population.

Only seven EU regions are “older” than Vidin – Portugal's Pinhal Interior Sul with 32.4% and Greece's Evrytania with 32.2%. Regions in Denmark, France, Italy, Spain and Belgium have “older” regions, but the difference with Vidin is negligible.

The average share of people of 65 years or older in the EU is 18% of the entire population of the Union.
