The instability and the conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East and North Africa change dramatically the security environment in Europe, Bulgaria's president Rosen Plevneliev said on Friday at the ongoing NATO summit in Wales.

Democratic principles and values and the rule of law are at risk, as well, he added. The head of state was adamant that these principles are the foundation of the democratic societies that make up NATO, therefore it should be more prepared and determined to protect the security of its Member States.

"With today's decision to approve NATO's Readiness Action Plan, we improve our readiness and increase our capability to handle common challenges," president Plevneliev said, as quoted by Darik news.

As national contributions to building the capabilities of NATO in the region, Plevneliev pointed out the establishment of a NATO Command Structure in Bulgaria, the inclusion of the country in the group of countries with a leading framework nation Germany in accordance with the Framework Nations Concept, as well as connecting the Bulgarian-American joint training center in Novo Selo with the training center in Bydgoszcz, Poland, among others. Bulgaria will continue to work for the closer special forces cooperation in crisis management and natural disasters response, as well as cyber defense, Plevneliev noted.

Bulgaria's president called for stepping up NATO's capabilities for surveillance and warning in the Black Sea region and the use of smart defense potential and the co-financing of common projects by the countries in the region.

The Head of State welcomed the initiative of the US President Barack Obama to improve the naval cooperation between the United States Navy, Bulgaria and Romania in the Black Sea in order to improve the level of their joint training.
