A Bulgarian exchange student was killed in a hit and run accident in North Carolina, reports the local TV channel WTKR.

According to the police, Afen Zahariev, 21, was walking on Highway 12 near Corolla, when he was killed by a car. 

Officials believe this accident occurred at around on Monday night, but Zahariev's body was discovered by a newspaper delivery driver early on Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday morning, the driver who allegedly killed Zahariev, realized there was a hit and run in Corolla and turned himself in to authorities. He told them he fled the scene because he thought he hit a deer.

The driver has been identified as 37-year-old Peter Thomas Luke, Jr. and he is now in the Currituck County Jail.

He has been charged with felony hit and run and is under at USD 20 000 bond.
