Animal Abuse Scandal Rocks Bulgaria: Detainees Opt to Stay Behind Bars
Bulgarian citizens Gabriela Sashova (26) and Krasimir Georgiev (34), who have garnered widespread outrage for their alleged involvement in animal abuse
A baby capricorn died in the Sofia zoo on Tuesday, reports the bTV national channel.
This is the sixth death of a herbivorous animal in the zoo, since the end of last week. Over the weekend died a camel, a yak and three gaurs.
As with the previous deaths, the cause is still not established and the autopsies have not revealed anything unusual. Blood samples have been taken and sent for testing.
Meanwhile, according to the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, the most plausible cause of death is poisoning – either by fungus in the animal fodder or deliberate poisoning.
The zoo director Ivan Ivanov told the media that the fodder has been replaced and the animals are given antibiotics and medications against poisoning, as a preventive measure.
Since Monday the zoo is closed for visitors and won't be opened until further notice.
According to Ivanov, there was nothing to worry about, but Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova told bTV the condition of some of the herbivorous animals was a cause for serious concern.
„I have ordered the zoo director to spare no effort and means to save all animals who can be saved,“ she said.
