France's Prime Minister Manuel Valls presented the resignation of his government to President Francois Hollande on Monday and was asked to form a new cabinet.

The press office of Hollande informed in a statement that a new government would be formed on Tuesday in line with the course outlined by the President.

The resignation came in response to criticism of leftist Economy Minister Arnaud Montebourg over the adoption of austerity measures which were stifling the country's economic growth.

Montebourg, as cited by the BBC News, had called earlier on for resistance to Germany's austerity policy.

Valls was appointed Prime Minister on March 31, 2014, replacing Jean-Marc Ayrault.

The cabinet reshuffle was triggered by a defeat of the ruling Socialists in local elections.
