A Sofia court has ruled that the royal residence Tsarska Bistritsa must be returned to the state by Bulgaria’s former Tsar and PM Simeon Saxe-Coburg and his sister Maria-Louisa.
According to the ruling of the Sofia District Court, as cited by 24 Hours Daily, Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and his sister Maria-Louisa are to pay compensations of BGN 140 752 each, as well as interest amounting to BGN 80 000, for using the property without any legal justification for a period of 5 years, from March 2006 to March 2011.
According to the ruling, the two were bona fide occupants of the royal residence. They spent BGN 168 000 on repairs at the "St Ivan Rilski" chapel, but they received revenues from entrance fees for the royal residence and from wood harvesting in the area.
Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and his sister Maria-Louisa are to cover the court expenses amounting to BGN 400 000, if the decision enters into force. The ruling can be appealed before the Sofia Appellate Court.
VKS was approached by Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and his sister Maria-Louisa, who sought the cancellation of the rulings of the courts of first and second indtance.
