Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova sent a letter to the Culture Ministry pleading for urgent measures for the protection of the ruins of the ancient town of Serdika, report the media.

In the past year the archaeological site right next to the Presidency and Council of Ministers buildings has been abandoned. The heavy rains throughout spring and summer have turned the ruins of the old city into a swamp with weeds, reeds and even frogs.

“Many experts believe that the situation is already alarming and the ruins will not survive the coming winter,” Fandakova writes in her letter to the caretaker Culture Minister Martin Ivanov. “It is of utmost importance to take measures for the conservation of the site. If you cannot do that, at least cover them with a sand bank.”

The Serdika city ruins were uncovered during the construction of the Sofia metro and the City Hall, through its Metropoliten company, has invested BGN 6 M in the archaeological excavations. 

The site, however, is public state property and the obligation for its protection is of the Culture Ministry. It has set aside a sum for the next stage of its conservation, but no public tender has been announced.

In her letter Fandakova says the municipality is providing security guards and periodically weeds out the vegetation and drains the water on its own expense.
