Bulgaria: New Customs Agency Head Vows Prosecutors' Probe into its Affairs Customs Agency head Vanyo Tanov, photo by BGNES

Vanyo Tanov, Customs Agency head, has vowed a probe of the prosecuting authority into the entity.

In a Thursday interview for Nova TV, Tanov made clear that 24 hours after his appointment he had realized that the Customs Agency was in a sorry state.

"I found the Customs Agency in terrible condition. At present, the Agency is back to where it was in the 90s, after all of its subdivisions were rendered inoperative. As regards revenues, the situation is even more tragic," Tanov stated, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio.

Tanov, who was head of the Customs Agency in the period 2009-2013, during the term in office of the center-right GERB government, claimed that the revenues of the entity for the last 4 months of 2013 and the past 8 months of 2014 amounted to BGN 1.2 B, down by BGN 100 M from the previous year.

He also suggested that no public procurement procedures had been conducted and all of the supply contracts had expired, causing the work of the Customs Agency to come to a standstill.

Tanov argued that a number of people were interested in rendering the Customs Agency inoperative, adding that the same people were seeking to incite public discontent over his appointment.

He said that he had no time to waste to find out whether his appointment had become a reason for protests, adding that he was "a fighter" and would not step down.

Tanov also noted that there had been a reshuffle at the Customs Agency on the very evening before he assumed office.

The decision of the caretaker government for Tanov's appointment as Customs Agency Director sparked considerable public discontent, which was particularly noticeable on Facebook and Twitter, but an attempt to organize a protest against the move on Wednesday evening collapsed.
