Kristalina Georgieva has been nominated to become EU foreign policy chief "in an attempt to break the deadlock" over who will take the post, the Financial Times wrote Wednesday.

The outgoing Bulgarian Commissioner's candidacy was announced by the interim Prime Minister Georgi Bliznashki, the influential newspaper's website explains, hours after the new caretaker government took over from the previous cabinet.

The Financial Times attributes the uncertainty of her candidacy over the past weeks to "political infighting in Bulgaria", as the formerly ruling socialist party "wanted to block her".

Her nomination became possible after the government resigned, FT explains.

EU leaders failed to pick a successor to the current High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, in mid-July.

Federica Mogherini, previously described as likely to get the job.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorski, another nominee, saw his reputation tarnished by a bugging scandal in which he rebuked the importance of US-EU relations.

Though Georgieva's candidacy is "gaining momentum" in Brussels and she is "frequently tipped by diplomats as a favorite" for the post, other names such as that of Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans are also being considered, according to the report.

FT underlines that Georgieva is "one of the most effective members of Jose Manuel Barroso's European Commission".

Alongside other media outlets, it earlier described her as a consensus candidate.
