Bulgaria’s caretaker premier Georgi Bliznashki has pledged to restore the people’s trust during the tenure of his cabinet, Reuters highlighted on Wednesday.

President Rosen Plevneliev on Tuesday nominated Bliznashki to lead a caretaker government that will prepare snap elections on October 5.

Another focus in the Reuters coverage of Bliznashki’s statement to the press after the law professor assumed office on Wednesday morning is his promise that the interim government “will do its best so that the elections are held with the active participation of the civil society."

The trust of Bulgarians in their politicians has been severely eroded during the 14 months in office of Bliznashki’s predecessor Plamen Oresharski. The nomination of controversial MP Delyan Peevski for head of Bulgaria's national security agency DANS by Oresharski sparked public outrage and widespread protests demanding the government's resignation, which Oresharski finally submitted last month.

Reuters has also drawn attention to Bliznashki’s support for the occupation of Sofia University by students. The occupation was part of the wider protests against Oresharski’s government by “tens of thousands of people […] angry about corruption and the cosy ties between big businesses and politicians.”
