Bulgaria may lose EUR 45 M in EU funding if the gas grid interconnection with Greece is delayed, according to former Deputy Prime Minister Daniela Bobeva.

Speaking Friday in Kardzhali, she said that the municipal councils at the three municipalities on the route of the pipeline, Kirkovo, Momchilgrad, and Kardzhali, had to adopt an urgent decision on the detailed site development plans of the conduit.

"Nobody can commit to a concrete price tag at this stage. The gas pipeline crosses 9 municipalities and all of them have to express their approval through decisions of the municipal councils," Bobeva declared, as cited by econ.bg.

Experts made clear that the compensations would be calculated in the same way regardless of the form of ownership of the land which the pipeline would cross.

"This will happen at a later stage, when an evaluation committee is formed, but no earlier than the approval of the detailed site development plans" the specialists explained.

Ognyan Nikolov from Bulgaria's Ministry of Regional Development assured that the road sections crossed by the pipeline would be restored because the municipalities retained a part of the control.

Bobeva is also to hold meetings with the mayors of the municipalities of Momchilgrad and Kirkovo to discuss the details and problems surrounding the Bulgaria-Greece gas grid interconnection project.

The pipeline is to be built by the joint venture ICGB (Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria) comprising the Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH) and IGI Poseidon.

The joint venture is in charge of financing, designing and building the gas grid interconnection.
